The Impact of the Great Depression on the Image of the American Society in the basis of Francis Scott Fitzgerald's "Great Gatsby" and Dashniell Hammett's "The Thin Man".

Praca na ma celu przedstawienie zmian zachodzących w amerykańskim społeczeństwie na przełomie lat 20. i 30. XX wieku. Na podstawie powieści „Wielki Gatsby” Francisa Scotta Fitzgeralda i „Papierowy człowiek” Dashiella Hammetta została przedstawiona rewolucja, jaka dokonała się w sercach Amerykanów w związku z kluczowymi wydarzeniami w ich kraju, między innymi wprowadzeniem prohibicji i Wielkim Kryzysem. Życie postaci literackich przełożono na realne wydarzenia; stali się oni obrazem tego, jak wglądała codzienność ówczesnych obywateli. Ukazane zostało przejście od społeczeństwa bogatego, pełnego entuzjazmu i optymizmu, do wspólnoty, która bała się o własny byt. Poruszony został temat przestępczości, etosu amerykańskiego snu i relacji międzyludzkich.This thesis focuses on changes made in the life of the American society at the end of the 1920s. On the basis of the Francis Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby” and Dashiell Hammett’s “The Thin Man,” the author shows the revolution that occurred in the hearts of all Americans and was connected with some crucial events in America such as prohibition and Great Depression. The lives of the novels’ characters are confronted with lives of real American people; they would become the picture which shows how did the everyday look like. It is shown how the society transformed; first they were wealthy, full of enthusiasm and optimism; then they started being afraid of living standards. Moreover, it raises the topic of crime, American dream ethos and interpersonal relations
